Everyone wants a bright beautiful smile. Complete oral health with general dentistry, maintained by good oral hygiene is critical to keeping your smile healthy and bright. Poor dental hygiene can lead to a plethora of problems in addition to dental caries or cavities. Gum disease can severely affect your oral health. Left untreated it can impact your overall health.

Periodontal disease, or gum disease occurs when bacteria in the mouth proliferate to the point where the gums become swollen and sometimes bleed. Everyone's mouth harbors bacteria. Good oral hygiene keeps these germs at bay. When good oral hygiene is lacking particles of food, mucous and bacteria work together forming a plaque that adheres to the teeth. As this plaque begins to build up it hardens into what is called tartar. This substance cannot be removed by daily brushing or flossing.

The buildup of plaque and tartar cause damage to the soft tissue around the teeth causing the gums to swell up and turn red. They may also bleed from time to time. Gingivitis can be reversed by professional cleaning and regular brushing and flossing of teeth. However, when it is left untreated it only grows worse until it turns into periodontitis. This inflammation around the teeth sets in motion the advance of serious oral health problems. Pockets form around the teeth as the gums pull away due to the inflammation. These pockets get infected while the plaque and bacteria spread below the gum line. Between the toxins produced by the bacteria and the body's immune system which works to fight the disease, the bone and connective tissue around the teeth begin to become compromised as they break down. If nothing is done, the teeth may eventually be lost due to the destruction of the bone, gums, and connective tissue that support the teeth. Periodontal therapy mitigates these losses.
