Certain types of damage or injury to a tooth require that it be protected. Large fillings, root canal therapy, a broken or cracked tooth are instances when a crown may be used for protection. A dental crown may also be used to protect a weak tooth or one which is badly discolored or misshapen. With our general dentistry treatments, crowns can be made from various materials such as stainless steel, gold alloy, porcelain-fused-to-metal, resin or ceramic.

When it has been determined that a crown is needed, the tooth in question will be prepared. Preparation of the tooth is determined by the damage that the tooth has incurred. Once the tooth has been prepared and the crown has been created, it will be permanently attached to the remaining part of the tooth.

Restore Cracked Teeth

Cracked teeth require the protection of a crown. Sometimes a cracked tooth will require root canal therapy in order to be saved. When this is the case, the root canal procedure will be taken care of prior to prepping the tooth for a crown. Once that is completed the tooth is prepared and the crown is seated, restoring your tooth back to its previous appearance and protected from further damage.

It is important to realize however that cracked teeth pose a special challenge. The crown will provide protection for the tooth and in most cases the tooth will be fine for years to come. Occasionally however, the crack may worsen despite the protection of the crown. The early an intervention can take place the better the likelihood of treatment success.

If you need a crown to restore, protect or strengthen one or more of your teeth, Dr. Amir will consult with you about the treatment plan and the type of crown that will best suit your needs. His primary concern is the health of your teeth as well as the beauty of your smile. Contact our office today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Amir.
